12 Miluarth, 5604
I have neglected my writings
in this book. Amazing things have happened to me, probably the least of
which was my 15th birthingday on the 5 of Miluarth. I am one of the select
few. I have been Chosen. There are two clutches on the hatching ground
sands. I hope to Impress one. Imagine! A dragonrider, me! It was a brown,
rather large, although I wouldn't be a very good judge. At first, I'll
admit, I was frightened. But he seemed friendly enough, and his eyes were
calm as they regarded me. I didn't know that there were eggs ready to hatch.
In fact, should the others in the Castle known that a dragon would be landing
in the courtyard that afternoon, the 3rd of Miluarth, they would have confined
me and the other lower-ranked children to indoor duties. I had been taking
a meal to the guardian-lizards, a large bowl laden with chunks of left-overs,
when the dragon landed. When he started nuzzling at me, I thought that
he wanted the meat in the bowl, and became defensive. His rider laughed
at me. He said that those little chunks wouldn't entice his brown. I had
to smile. He had a kind face. I didn't see him again, since I hurried off
to finish my chore. The letter came a week later. Yesterday. It said that
I should pack clothing and anything else I would need, and be at Draconia
Nest in time for the hatchings. It said that I could stay there, if
I would like, to ensure that I would be there for the hatching. Mother
said that I could. Father wasn't particularly pleased, I think that he'll
miss me, although he'll never admit to it. I packed today. As I was going
to put this book in my bag, I realized thatI hadn't recorded any of the
wonderous events of the past few days. I realize that this is short, but
maybe , after I get settled in the Nest, I'll be able to write more. Wish
me luck!
With that, she closed the
book. She had had to dip her quill into her ink well a few times to write
it all, but now she closed the ink well, cleaned off the quill and put
all three into the small pack at her feet. She closed the pack, picked
up the three, and took one last look about the room that she had shared
with three other girls. They were all out, doing chores, so she had it
to herself. She took a deep breath, and walked resolutely out to meet her
destiny.
